Nature Exploration "Night of the Dark Creatures" in Portugal

Close to Halloween time, BioLiving organized a “green” evening to remember: the “Night of the Dark Creatures”. At nightime, in a small village located in the Litoral Center of Portugal, around 20 people gathered in an “Haunted House” (more like an old and abandoned primary school) to “investigate” the mysteries of the nocturnal animals that live in the region, which are still considered by many as “scary”.

From bats and frogs to spiders and centipedes, the knowledge of the participants on nocturnal biodiversity and ecology was tested in a group dynamic where each group had to solve the four puzzles created. One of the cases concerned the death of a radiated wolf spider (Hogna radiata) in a forest: what species is its predator?

By exploring clues about the behaviour and characteristics of various ‘suspicious’ species, the participant-investigators got to the real “culprit” behind the spider's death. This game helps to understand the ecology of “scary” species, such as spiders, by demystifying folklore and myths associated with them. By learning more about nocturnal biodiversity, it is easier to acknowledge their importance in our ecosystems and feel inspired to act towards their protection. In addition, participants could also practice species identification, which can be a useful green skill to explore nature around us.

When all groups finished their “investigation”, there was a small social gathering prepared, with warm drinks and delicious healthy snacks (plant-based whenever possible and using reusable tableware). At this time, BioLiving presented #GreenMemeEffect project as well as its website and communication channels. The participants could then explore the outputs produced, such as Green Info Cards, Green Memes and Stickers, among others, while enjoying each other's company.
